[In preview] Public Preview: Azure Migrate Supports Premium SSD v2 Disks

Azure Migrate now supports migrating virtual machine disks to Azure Premium SSD v2 disks in public preview, enhancing users' ability to leverage advanced disk options with greater flexibility and improved performance. Premium SSD v2 disks are designed for mission-critical applications requiring high input/output operations per second (IOPS) and throughput, making them suitable for demanding workloads[4].

Previously, migrating from Premium SSD v1 to Premium SSD v2 involved a snapshot-based process, which was not seamless. The new feature introduced by the Azure disk product team enables direct conversion of disks from Premium SSD to Premium SSD v2 with just a few clicks, reducing complexity and downtime. However, this direct conversion currently requires the virtual machine to be stopped and deallocated and is available only in certain Azure regions[1][5].

Premium SSD v2 disks also support a 4K physical sector size by default, with an option to configure to a 512E sector size, catering to various application requirements[2].

In summary, the public preview for Azure Migrate’s support of Premium SSD v2 disks brings more efficient disk migration with enhanced performance characteristics, better suited for mission-critical applications demanding high IOPS and throughput[4].
